The Niger Basin Authority (ABN) organized a regional workshop from April 13th to 15th, 2021, for the establishment of a functional platform for the transboundary biosphere reserve of W. This workshop was part of ABN’s support for the promotion and implementation of an ecosystem approach and IWRM practices through better coordination of interventions related to the complex among the three riparian countries, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Niger. The event took place in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

The workshop brought together participants at the regional and national levels to reflect on how to establish a functional platform for the transboundary biosphere reserve of W (Benin, Burkina Faso, and Niger), taking into account the entire influence zone of the Mekrou Basin. The aim was to promote and implement an ecosystem approach and IWRM practices through enhanced inter/intra-sectoral coordination at various levels (local, national, transboundary).

The workshop was organized as part of the project “NB-ITTAS: Improving the management, governance, and conservation of knowledge-based resources in the Niger Basin and the aquifer ecosystems of the Lullemeden-Taoudéni/Tanezrouft region,” funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This project aims to improve the management, governance, and conservation of resources in the Niger River Basin and the aquifer systems of the Lullemeden-Taoudéni/Tanezrouft region (ITTAS), support the implementation of IWRM for the benefit of communities, and enhance ecosystem resilience.
